Gastonia Historic District Commission adopts minutes, continues two COA requests to Aug. 27

The Gastonia Historic District Commission convened July 23, 2026, and adopted the prior meeting minutes by voice vote. Chair Caitlin Peeler opened the meeting and reviewed quasi‑judicial procedures, reminding participants that testimony must be competent and fact‑based and that appeals of COA decisions may be filed to the board of adjustment within 30 days.

The commission heard two substantive agenda items: a continued Certificate of Appropriateness for 535 West Harvey Ave (chimney removal) and an after‑the‑fact COA for 308 West 5th Ave (replacement siding and door). After discussion the panel voted to continue both items to the August 27 regular meeting to allow the applicants to provide supplemental engineer reports or finished photographs. Staff said a special meeting could be called within 48 hours of receiving new materials if necessary, but indicated special meetings must be held in person and are limited by quorum requirements.
