The Peekskill City Council unanimously approved a resolution July 27 authorizing temporary closures on portions of Union Avenue so the Assumption Church can hold a religious procession, El Senor de Giron, on Aug. 2.
City Clerk (requested by council) described the request as the first procession of its kind in Peekskill and said organizers asked for a short, managed closure. "They wanna hold a religious procession, El Senor de Giron, and it will be the 1st time that this is done in Peekskill," the clerk said. The resolution lists closures at Union Avenue & Hudson Avenue, Union & Elm Street, Union & Ream Street, and Union & 2nd Street.
Council members asked whether the police had reviewed the route and timing; the clerk said Lieutenant DeRondeau assisted in identifying the intersections to be closed and confirmed police had reviewed the plan. Council members also clarified that streets would be reopened once the procession passed. The resolution carried unanimously.
