Heard County adopts updated arena guidelines; public commenters raise related concerns

The Heard County Board of Commissioners approved updated arena guidelines and contract language and set an effective date of January 1, 2021.

Commissioner Larry Hammond read the proposed guidelines during the July 27 meeting and the Board approved them on a motion by Hammond, seconded by Commissioner James Perry. Public commenters addressed arena matters during the public comment period: Randy Chesnutt spoke about the Cattlemen’s Association and the arena guidelines/contract, and Kim Pike spoke in favor of creating an arena board. The Board also approved declaring a list of county items surplus and authorized a public auction on July 31, 2021 (motion Hooks/Caldwell).

Several speakers raised arena governance and stakeholder concerns during public comment; commissioners recorded the public input and approved the guidelines as written with the enacted effective date.
