After visiting Eagle Point fire site, councilors urge stronger wildfire mitigation and material standards

Council Member Nyen and Mayor Calloway described observations from the Eagle Point (Cottonwood) fire area near Beaver, Utah, including a photograph Mayor Calloway showed of "a fully engulfed cabin surrounded by unburned trees." Both councilors emphasized that using fire‑resistant building materials (stucco, metal) and proactive mitigation can improve structure survivability, though wildfire behavior remains unpredictable.

Stg. Jon Bettridge reported the state fuels crew has begun mitigation near the archery range and noted two recent, lightning-caused fires (Ashdown Gorge and near Meadow Lake) that briefly redirected personnel but were showing containment; Ashdown Gorge burned less than 0.1 acre. Council members urged aggressive development of the Community Wildfire Protection Plan and flagged potential insurance impacts for property owners if mitigation and materials standards are not addressed.
