Residents press commissioners to protect health, limit heights and require conservation easements

A number of residents urged the commission to proceed cautiously and to strengthen environmental protections before recommending the specific plan. Longtime residents highlighted uncertainty about historical contamination on the Baylands and said drive‑by inspections and five‑year reviews may be insufficient for protecting children from chronic exposures. "Do you want another Love Canal in Brisbane?" one speaker asked, urging additional testing and conservative choices.

Speakers also raised operational concerns about pile driving noise, traffic impacts if Tunnel Road or other routes are closed during construction, and whether the plan’s unit counts (and the proposed high commercial square footage) would worsen the local jobs‑housing imbalance. Several asked that the commission consider conservation easements that "run with the land" to lock in restoration areas and that the city confirm dark‑sky and noise ordinance applicability to Baylands development.
