Youth hold mock Salinas council meeting, highlight local issues including housing and transit

Karina Silva, neighborhood services coordinator, opened the July 24 mock council meeting and introduced the 2026 Salinas Youth and Government Institute, then Mayor Rodriguez called the session to order and led administrative items including the pledge and roll call. "I'm honored to introduce the 2026 Salinas Youth and Government Institute," Silva said as students prepared to make public comments.

Over the course of the morning, students and youth participants raised neighborhood concerns ranging from damaged sidewalks and dog waste to the placement of a new drive‑through Starbucks and the need for better bus service. The meeting concluded with a staff presentation on an affordable housing proposal and final council remarks; city staff noted that, "due to the nature of this mock city council meeting, no action is taken or required."
