Residents and road supervisors told the commissioners that Prairie County’s road department is under-staffed and that recent equipment bids are straining the budget.
A public commenter recalled a neighboring county’s recent purchase of a service truck with bids reported at $212,000 and $186,000, and said that a chair’s vote procedure allowed the higher bid to be reconsidered and ultimately a lower bid was selected. Commissioners and staff reviewed local procurement thresholds and noted the county’s competitive-bid rules for purchases above approximately $80,000.
Road supervisor Terry (Todd) Henry provided a status update on bridge projects and maintenance tasks and described how seasonal staffing gaps have left the department short. Commissioners discussed recruiting, retention, and potential contingency plans such as hiring local contractors for emergency calls or creating agreements with neighboring counties and private contractors to ensure emergency access during storms.
Participants discussed alternative approaches to reduce costs, including buying smaller trailers stocked with tools in multiple locations, seeking additional competitive bids, and exploring federal or state reimbursement when emergency work is required. No final procurement decision on new equipment was made at the meeting.
