Committee approves annual agreement supporting Norwalk Senior Center services

The Norwalk Community Services Committee on July 22 authorized an agreement to provide ongoing senior services through the coming fiscal year. The agenda listed an agreement at 11 Allen Road (language in the agenda referenced the facility name in ways that differed slightly from the executive director's self-identification); Beatrix Lane, executive director, spoke for the Norwalk Senior Center and described the organization’s mission and scale.

"My name is Beatrix Lane, executive director of the Norwalk Senior Center," she said. Lane told the committee the center serves adults 55 and older and that "over 5,000 elderly and disabled seniors visit our center in any given year" and that the center has "nearly 2,000 members." She said membership is $40 a year and that the center raises a significant portion of operating costs through donations and fundraising because it is not fully municipally funded.

Councilmembers praised the center’s services and asked for more detail about trends and the recent discontinuation of the center’s transportation program. Lane said the center's membership 'sweet spot' is 1,500–2,000 paid members; she said participation spiked during the COVID vaccine period and that a recent renovation helped bring members back. Committee members noted prior city grant amounts were smaller in earlier years (one participant referenced $325,000 historically) and that current documentation included a $400,000 figure; members asked for clearer backup on service counts and budgets at a future meeting.

The committee moved and approved the action item unanimously. The authorization allows the mayor to execute the agreement and any amendments needed for the July 1, 2026–June 30, 2027 year.
