Grant update: board favors interpretive Abenaki signs; raises easement check for proposed 1,000 sq. ft. meeting space

Erik Skarsten reported on progress for a grant-funded interpretive-sign program. He described sign content options including "Abenaki names with English translation, flora/fauna, significance to Abenaki, photo/drawing," and discussed whether to use detailed sign text or numbered signs paired with a map or QR codes for supplemental information. The board expressed concern that reliance on phones or map apps can be distracting while people are in the woods.

ES also proposed creating a meeting space of approximately 1,000 square feet with a solid surface and winter access. Chair David Paganelli said the board should consult easement holders—the Vermont Land Trust (VLT) and VHCD—to confirm such a cleared meeting surface would be acceptable under existing easements. Judith Falk reported that a representative from Odanak First Nation and Emily Boles plan to visit the land and trails.
