Council tables offer to accept deed for 503 Main Street while city researches lot value

Council members discussed a proposal in which the owner of 503 Main Street would deed the property to the City of Jefferson in return for having assessments (demolition, mowing and snow removal) settled. Members compared the estimated costs already charged to the property against its potential market value as an empty lot. The finance officer was directed to research comparable lot values and speak with area builders about likely resale price; the council voted to table the matter until the Feb. 6, 2023 regular meeting (motion by P. Rigg; second by J. Casper).

The motion to table preserves council options while staff gather valuation information and provides time for the owner and the city to negotiate terms. The council will revisit the item at its Feb. 6 meeting with any findings from the finance officer and builder outreach.
