Commission approves engineering and boundary agreements for airport runway extension, leveraging KDOT funds

Director Welsh told the commission the city should authorize two professional service agreements with Alfred Benish and Company to move the runway extension project into the engineering/design phase. Welsh said the first agreement for engineering design is $670,500 and the second for boundary adjustment work is $11,848; under the Kansas Airport Improvement Program (KAIP) KDOT will reimburse roughly $603,000 (90% of design), leaving a local design match of about $67,050 and a total city responsibility for both agreements of about $78,898.

“The first agreement is for the engineering design of the runway extension project in the amount of $670,500,” Welsh said. Commissioners asked whether land acquisition would be required; staff said some land or easements may be needed for the southern parcel and the design agreement includes boundary work and legal descriptions to define needed rights. The commission approved authorization for the city manager to execute both agreements by unanimous roll call.
