Subcommittee approves sending revised board‑member roles language to full board after attorney flagged overlap

The subcommittee discussed a proposed policy to clarify the limits of individual board member authority and how the board functions as a unit. The Chair said the draft, revised by Jody Goler, would make explicit that “no individual member of the board by virtue of holding office shall exercise any administrative responsibility with respect to the schools,” and that members do not have individual authority to bind the district.

An attorney’s comments recommended deleting sections that overlap with existing bylaws and policies (including bylaw 9000 and policies 9010, 9040 and 1312); committee members disagreed about deleting overlapping language. Supporters said retaining the clarified language would educate members and provide a basis to remove committee duties from members who act alone. After discussion, the subcommittee moved, seconded and approved forwarding the revised version supplied by Jody Goler to the full board for consideration.
