After state law change, residents press Bayonne police on e‑bike enforcement

A resident told the council that e‑bikes and electric scooters are being ridden dangerously in Bayonne and that enforcement has been inconsistent; she said riders often ignore registration and insurance requirements and sometimes ride on sidewalks or with multiple passengers. "They ran into a car and a guy tried to stop him... The kid says, 'f you' and he took off," she said, describing repeated incidents and vehicle damage.

Chief (police) responded that the state law just went into effect days earlier and that the department had conducted education and awareness efforts; officers are instructed to stop violators when safe but will not pursue dangerous chases. The chief confirmed the new rules apply to scooters and all electric personal‑mobility devices and explained officers will begin enforcement following the public‑awareness period.
