Parks staff detail quarterly report: 22 parks, 880 acres and summer programming

Parks and Recreation staff delivered a quarterly operations briefing covering April through June, saying the department now manages 22 parks and about 880 acres of public open space.

"So just roughly, real quick, we have 22 parks in our system," the staff member said, listing inventory that also includes 540 acres of city parkland, 12 playgrounds, eight miles of paved trail and eight miles of mountain-bike trail.

The presentation highlighted heavy summer programming and facility use. Staff said the department operates three splash pads, runs swim lessons with long waitlists and registered 128 participants in one swim roster. Staff also reported roughly 10,000 attendees at the recent Park in the Park event and a large fireworks display tied to summer festivities.

Board members asked about construction impacts in high-traffic areas downtown and about hours for splash-pad operations; staff said they have fielded feedback and are monitoring operations. The briefing also covered facility rentals (multiple community buildings and 237 recent field reservations) and volunteer events such as a community cleanup that drew about 20 volunteers.

The board did not record any formal policy decisions during the presentation; the meeting moved from the staff briefing to project-specific updates.
