SLVD buys signs after insurer clarifies pedestrian bridges are not covered

Sawyer Lake Village District commissioners voted to purchase signs for two pedestrian bridges after consulting with Primex and legal counsel about insurance coverage. Treasurer Claudia Ferber reported the Primex insurance premium decreased from $1,968 last year to $1,881 this year (a savings of $87); Primex clarified that the bridges were never covered under the policy and changed wording to make that clear.

Legal advice provided to the board said SLVD's liability for a bridge injury would attach only if the district failed to warn of a known danger. Based on that guidance the commissioners voted to install signs on both bridge approaches reading that pedestrians cross at their own risk. Commissioners also approved purchasing and installing beach ordinance signs and tasked Commissioner David Ferber with ordering and installing them.

The motion to purchase the bridge signs and the beach ordinance signs passed unanimously.
