Commissioner seeks emergency resolution urging Florida senators to extend TPS for Haitians and Syrians; colleagues decline dais action

Commissioner Christopher McVoy asked his colleagues to adopt an emergency resolution urging Florida’s U.S. senators to support the House measure extending Temporary Protected Status for Haitians and Syrians, citing a Supreme Court decision with an effective date of June 30.

"So what I'm looking for consensus from my colleagues is, that we put a emergency resolution... to ask our Florida senators to support the House resolution on this," McVoy said. He noted Lake Worth Beach has a large Haitian community and said local residents could be affected.

Several commissioners pushed back. Commissioner Anthony Segreich said the commission's role is to focus on city issues and that official statements on national politics can misrepresent residents. Vice Mayor Mimi May said individually she would advocate but was uncomfortable speaking for the entire city from the dais. Mayor Betty Resch and other commissioners agreed the matter was better suited for constituent outreach than a city resolution.

The clerk recorded no consensus to draft a dais-sponsored emergency resolution; McVoy’s request was therefore not advanced on the record. Commissioners encouraged residents and individual commissioners to contact federal senators directly if they wished.
