Apache Junction board approves intergovernmental agreement with EVIT for career technical education

The Apache Junction Unified School District governing board on July 24 approved an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) with the East Valley Institute of Technology to provide career technical education at EVIT’s satellite and central campuses and delegated authority to the superintendent to execute the agreement.

Dr. Popolaro, the district superintendent, told the board the agreement lets students attending the main and power campuses attend EVIT programs beginning Monday. “We’re we’re very happy that we have an agreement with EVIT so that our students who are attending the the main campus and the power campus will be able to attend beginning Monday,” he said. He added that “EVIT is in charge of all transportation this year” and that EVIT would contact parents with pickup locations while district staff will help students get to the proper transportation points at the front of the school.

A board member moved to approve the IGA; Mrs. Ross seconded. The board approved the motion by voice vote, recorded as 5 to 0 in favor. The board also delegated authority to the superintendent to sign the agreement consistent with instructions given in the executive session.

Board members asked no substantive questions during the public briefing, and the superintendent said staff were preparing to assist with Monday’s transportation logistics. The board’s action follows the meeting’s executive-session consultation with counsel about the district’s negotiating position on the IGA.

The agreement covers the district’s participation in EVIT career-technical programs at satellite and central campuses; specific scheduling, student eligibility, and transportation pickup points will be communicated to families by EVIT, the superintendent said. The board’s recorded vote was 5 to 0 in favor.
