Belgrade awarded $1 million EPA Brownfields multipurpose grant to fund assessments and cleanups

Catherine told the committee the city was one of 20 communities nationwide to receive a multipurpose Brownfields grant from the EPA and described the award as flexible because it can fund both assessments and cleanup activities. “We applied for... $1,000,000 in what's called a multipurpose grant,” she said, noting that the grant requires no local match and begins Oct. 1 with a five‑year period for work.

Staff said the grant could be used to provide no‑cost phase 1 or phase 2 environmental assessments to private property owners, to fund cleanups of city‑owned properties, and to support planning and outreach to identify brownfield sites. Catherine requested the committee serve as the Brownfields advisory committee as an ancillary role to avoid forming separate committees.
