Residents tell Three Oaks Council proposed millage could burden long-time and fixed-income households

During the Truth in Taxation public hearing on May 30, 2026, three residents addressed the Council with concerns about affordability and community impacts. Sherry Trucks raised general concerns about "increasing property taxes and the impact on residents" and asked how taxes are calculated. Mike Holfels said that increases in property taxes and utility costs "continue to place a burden on residents, particularly long-time community members and those living on fixed incomes." Melanie Hutchinson warned that higher costs could affect housing affordability, the ability of new families to move into Three Oaks, and "the potential long-term impact on River Valley Schools."

Council Member Jones responded to questions about taxable value versus assessed value and explained how property taxes are calculated. President Graziano acknowledged residents' concerns and noted that increasing costs are affecting local government operations. The comments were part of a hearing that Faulkner said would inform Council consideration of a proposed 0.2891 mill increase to be levied in 2026; formal Council action was scheduled for the June 10, 2026 meeting.
