State's attorney and sheriff highlight staffing needs; commission discusses support-staff hires and tech tools

Commissioners reviewed budgets for the state's attorney and the sheriff's office and discussed staffing and technology that county leaders say are needed to process rising caseloads and evidence streams. The state's attorney requested five support positions (office support specialist and manager roles) as the highest near-term priority and said two additional attorneys could be considered if caseload increases further.

The sheriff emphasized the volume of digital evidence and reports that county prosecutors ingest and described a recent technology investment (AI tools and transcription flows) and how support staff are necessary to manage that workload. Commissioners also discussed establishing a capped recognition fund for reserve officers to reimburse work-related hours or training benefits rather than permanent pay changes. The commission agreed to fold smaller noncontroversial funds into a blanket motion and take final budget actions at the Aug. 3 follow-up hearing.
