Commissioners press staff for cost options to resurface 1st Avenue South used by boat trailers

Vice Mayor Mimi May said she was concerned about the condition of 1st Avenue South, noting the street is the primary route people use to launch boats and that its poor condition risks vehicle damage and public complaints. "I don't want us to forget that. It's been a thorn in a lot of neighbor sides," she said.

Staff explained 1st Avenue South is currently part of a capital-improvement program tied to the Gulfstream project and may be delayed until that project's next phase. City staff told commissioners they will "break out" the cost to complete that specific block and return with figures so the commission can decide whether to accelerate work. Stuart added enforcement and payment for boat launching typically occurs through permits or the ParkMobile app and said he will pull and deliver revenue and citation numbers to staff for review.

Commissioner Sarah Maliga asked for clearer financial backup for a related transfer from the storm fund to the rate stabilization account; staff agreed to include fund balance details in the packet. "There was no balance backups ... I had requested that that be part of our backup," Maliga said, and staff responded they would provide the requested documentation.

The commission directed staff to bring cost estimates for an earlier resurfacing option and to provide recent revenue numbers tied to boat-launching and trailer citations ahead of the regular meeting.
