Union Arts Center opens ‘Canvas and Threads: Two Visions’ featuring sister artists

The Township of Union Arts Center opened "Canvas and Threads: Two Visions" on an evening when local officials and residents gathered to celebrate the work of sisters Lucy Maragni and Ann Asantee. Committee woman Sandra Terrell welcomed attendees and introduced Senator Joe Bryan and assistant township administrator Bill Wade before inviting Senator Cryan to speak.

“Tonight, we celebrate the creative journeys of two talented sisters,” Committee woman Sandra Terrell said as she opened the event, framing the exhibition as a collaboration of artistry and family. Senator Cryan praised the emotional power of the work, calling several pieces “absolutely stunning” and saying he felt moved when viewing the show: “I was crying. I was choking.”

Leslie James, the exhibition curator, noted the artists are lifelong Union residents and encouraged visitors to talk with them and sign the guestbook. James said the exhibit will remain on view through August 17 and that works are available for purchase, with artist contact cards at the sign-in table.

The opening focused on local creative practice and community memory, highlighting how two different media — paint and needlework — can echo similar color themes and local subjects. The Arts Center and the artists asked visitors to leave comments for the creators and provided information for purchases.
