Mayor praises community response after cardiac arrest at turf event

The Greenfield mayor used his July 21 remarks to describe a medical emergency at a recent turf event in which a participant suffered cardiac arrest and was transported to the hospital. He credited bystanders and city responders with keeping the person alive until emergency surgery could be performed.

"I couldn't have been more proud of everybody," the mayor said, naming Len Benning, nursing student Alexandra Herring and Alexander Palifka as people who began life-saving care and noting that city paramedics ('Mel and Andy') also responded. Staff told the council the patient went to St. Luke's and underwent emergency cardiac surgery for what the mayor described as a 'widowmaker' blockage; the patient was sedated and responsive to commands in the latest update provided to the council.

The mayor framed the episode as an example of community value and the role of municipal services, adding that while levy limits constrain budgets, residents who pay city taxes receive emergency and public-safety services in return. He also acknowledged staff and volunteers who support park events and public safety.
