Council office plans frugal renovations and historic display of local art

Council staff reported incremental, cost-conscious improvements to council office space, including new carpet, paint, window shades, and replacement conference and kitchen chairs. Staff also said they have located historic black-and-white construction photography from 1937 of the courthouse and plan to frame and display pieces, with some donated work from artist Phil Ponder earmarked for a small conference room tribute.

"We've got new carpet and new paint and new shades," the staff presenter said, describing plans to reupholster quality chairs and frame historic photographs for a Phil Ponder conference room. Staff estimate the projects can be completed by the end of the year if procurement and delivery timelines hold. Members urged General Services to assign a single project manager to ensure completion and suggested retaining some contingency funds if future office changes are required because of potential structural changes to the council.

A separate office reconfiguration idea discussed was turning the central training area into a fully enclosed conference room by raising dividers to the ceiling, which staff said would improve privacy and usability for meetings. Staff emphasized the upgrades are designed not to preclude future changes and that current spending is intended to be frugal and reversible.
