Board appoints Tim Garza to fill Zone 4 vacancy, cites financial expertise

The Blaine County School District Board voted July 21 to appoint Tim Garza to fill the Zone 4 trustee vacancy through 2029.

Garza, who has served as a community member of the district finance committee for more than two years, told trustees he brings financial‑software and local business experience that would help the board address a multi‑million‑dollar budget shortfall. “I think it's something I've done my whole career — preparing for big meetings,” Garza said during his interview, describing how his background would help with forecasting and financial questions.

Trustees praised both applicants but said the district’s immediate need for finance expertise made Garza the better fit. One trustee summarized the decision: the district “needs somebody in the finance position” given current forecasts. The motion to appoint Garza was moved, seconded, and approved by roll call.

The chair said the new trustee would be onboarded immediately and expected to begin attending committee meetings; the appointee will formally take his seat at the August regular meeting unless a special meeting is scheduled beforehand.
