Spring Grove Area SD student selected for U.S. national space‑modeling team, district announces Poland trip and historic schoolhouse open house

Superintendent Daffany told the board that Spring Grove High School senior Gotham Nion qualified for the U.S. national space‑modeling team and was selected to compete at the world championships in Poland next August 2027. “He was selected to be a member of the US national team to compete in the world's space modeling championships which will be held in Poland next August 2027,” Daffany said.

The superintendent framed the selection as a rare accomplishment requiring “extensive knowledge of aerospace engineering principles, precision craftsmanship and countless hours of design, testing and refinement,” and the board offered congratulations. The board also heard several calendar and facilities updates from the superintendent: the district office will relocate to a new space at the YMCA site, and the district will hold an open house at the historic schoolhouse on East College Avenue on July 30 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., with the historic bell to be rung at 3 p.m. by Tracy Krauss of the Spring Grove Area Historical Preservation Society and the superintendent to mark the building’s transition to preservation.

Daffany reminded the board of upcoming dates for staff and students, including an August 17 opening day for staff, student orientation dates, and the first student days (staggered starts for certain grade levels) in August. The board did not take further action on the student’s travel at this meeting; the superintendent presented the achievement and district calendar items for the board’s information.
