Council adopts Vision Zero resolution after rejecting deferral

The council adopted RS2026-2064, a resolution urging the Nashville Department of Transportation and related offices to accelerate Vision Zero efforts in response to rising pedestrian and cyclist fatalities. The Transportation Infrastructure Committee had recommended a one‑meeting deferral to allow new NDOT hires to onboard, but several members opposed delay and the sponsor withdrew the deferral motion and moved for approval.

Supporters argued the city already funds Vision Zero work and cannot wait while people are harmed. "We have constituents who are dying every day," said a council member opposing further delay. The sponsor, Council Member Coopin, emphasized the RFPs under way for a Vision Zero program manager and new leadership but said he would press departments to deliver interim solutions while new staff are hired.

The resolution was adopted after floor discussion; members asked for clarification about which agencies carry the 'enforcement' role (MNPD traffic units vs. NDOT operations) and urged NDOT to return to committee with interim strategies and reporting.
