Commission approves first reading of proposal to raise residential garbage fee after 17 years

Director Tate presented an ordinance (26-314) proposing a monthly increase to the residential garbage service fee to address 17 years of inflation and to rebuild a solid waste fund that staff said recently drew down fund balance for operations. Staff told commissioners the fund would have approximately $23,000 remaining after the current fiscal year absent adjustments, and that operational costs are about $1.2 million annually.

Commissioners asked how the increase was calculated and requested comparative pricing; staff said private contractors typically charge between $30 and $55 per month for basic service without the city’s additional brush, bulk and special pickups. The commission carried the first reading; a final vote is set for August 4.
