Hochatown board approves GPS tracking policy for high-value town vehicles and equipment

The Board of Trustees approved a vehicle-tracking and access/use policy that will require GPS tracking on town-owned vehicles and equipment valued over $10,000, with discretion for department heads to require trackers on lower-value but high-risk items.

During discussion staff and trustees emphasized multiple objectives: faster emergency response, theft recovery, maintenance oversight and liability evidence. One trustee summarized the benefits in the record: "We're not just doing it to track. We're doing it for the liability protection and training and resource management," (speaker S1). Trustees debated whether the policy should initially target police and fire vehicles only or be broadened to all town equipment; the board directed staff and counsel to include property valued in excess of $10,000 with discretion for smaller items and to set department-head reporting procedures.

The policy will be added to the employee handbook and include an authorization workflow such that department heads are primary reporting officials; staff said attorney revisions would be incorporated before final publication. The motion to approve the policy with the discussed revisions passed on a roll-call vote recorded in the meeting minutes.
