Shelter to add FeLV/FIV and heartworm testing, funded partly by recycling program

Trish told commissioners the shelter will begin offering SNAP testing for cats to screen for feline leukemia and FIV before adoption and will start heartworm testing for dogs so those tests can be included with the adoption package. "We're now gonna be bringing in, snap test for cats to test everybody for female leukemia and for female age, but prior to being adopted," Trish said, summarizing the new health checks.

She said revenue from aluminum-can recycling has created a steady funding stream that will allow the shelter to add these tests to the adoption package. No formal county funding action was recorded; Trish presented the operational change as an internally funded shelter improvement and took no further policy requests during the meeting.
