Elections staff outlines vote-by-mail and filing dates and defends registration verification steps

Elections staff (Raymond) told the committee the office has conducted about a dozen tours and demonstrations to educate voters and said staff will send a PDF with further details to the county board. He outlined key dates: Aug. 5 is the first day to apply for vote-by-mail, Aug. 25 is the first day to circulate consolidated-petition signatures, the filing window runs Nov. 16'23, and the first ballots can be sent Sept. 24.

During the elections discussion several committee members raised concerns that online registration options might allow noncitizens to register by supplying a driver's-license number rather than a Social Security number. Raymond said registration and verification follow state statutes, described steps involving the DMV and identity documentation and urged members that the county follows the state's procedures. Several members said the issue is a state-law concern and discussed pursuing clarifying inquiries in Springfield.
