After July 3 storm, Walworth County Room served as short-term shelter; Red Cross praised for rapid response

County staff briefed the board that the Walworth County Room at Health and Human Services was used as a short-term shelter after severe weather on July 3 and that the Red Cross led most shelter operations.

A staff member said the Red Cross was "a tremendous partner" and able to deploy almost immediately, and that the room worked well for short-term mass care although it lacks showering facilities and long-term capacity; staff reported three overnight stays and additional visitors who used resources and food. The board asked staff to review public-works support, communications about who calls an emergency, and readiness for future activations.
