Council advances five finalists in city attorney search

The Fort Myers City Council voted Wednesday to advance a slate of finalists in the search for the city attorney, approving a motion to send the candidates to the interview phase.

Marlon Scott, the city's director of human resources, introduced the recruitment consultant and described the process that produced the finalists. "Finding the right city attorney is one of the most significant hires for any city," Scott said, explaining the city had partnered with Norlock and Associates for a nationwide search. After discussion, a councilmember moved to "move forward with Renee's recommendations" of external and internal candidates; the motion was seconded and the mayor called for a vote. "Hearing no opposition, motion carries," the mayor said.

The council approved advancing the finalists to one-on-one interviews scheduled for Wednesday, July 29, with public presentations the following morning. The vote was recorded as a carried voice motion; no roll-call tally was stated on the record. The council directed staff and the consultant to proceed with scheduling and logistical arrangements for interviews and any necessary background checks.

The council will consider any subsequent employment negotiations or formal appointment after interviews and any contingent background/reference checks are complete.
