Fort Lee asks Prince George planners for traffic impact analysis, cites training access risks

A Fort Lee official told the Prince George County Planning Commission on July 23 that the installation is concerned the proposed River Road truck terminal could create congestion that interferes with military training and logistics and requested a traffic impact analysis (TIA) and formal planning coordination.

The speaker, who identified themself as the master planner and real property officer for Fort Lee, said the garrison commander and leadership value a long-standing partnership with the county but must ensure installation operational capabilities are not compromised. The representative said: "Our primary focus remains protecting the installation’s operational capabilities and maintaining high military readiness... we respectfully request a traffic impact analysis... to give us a clear data-driven picture of what traffic impacts to expect."

Fort Lee’s statement was cited by staff and several commissioners as a primary reason to request more robust traffic study documentation. Staff noted the case is in close proximity to the installation and that state code requires notification to military installations within a certain distance so they may comment. The Fort Lee request was part of staff’s rationale for recommending postponement if the applicant does not provide an adequate TIA.
