Prairie County meeting: officials and staff weigh options for clearing abandoned vehicles on county property

County staff and several local participants spent the meeting reviewing abandoned vehicles on county property, discussing how some items are evidence and others could be processed through the state junk-vehicle program. Participants identified a pickup, a truck frame and two campers left at the gravel pit and a motor home that has been at the county site for roughly a decade. A county representative (Speaker 7) explained the legal posting process and what happens when a vehicle is turned over to the junk-vehicle program: “we have to keep a record of that … once something has been turned over to the junk vehicle program, the state owns it.” Participants discussed alternatives — hauling to a scrap buyer, having the county post notices, or accepting the program’s fixed payment — and agreed to coordinate follow-up with the county hauler and the official the transcript identifies as Keefer to resolve which items can be disposed and which must remain as evidence.
