Officials warn child placement costs are rising; correctional placements can cost up to $750 per day

Human Services staff presented tables breaking down average annual out‑of‑home placement costs and explained the range of placements used for children in county care. Human Services Director Beth Hoerchler said placement types include correctional placement (the most expensive), residential treatment for highly behavioral youth, group homes, foster care, and kinship care. Hoerchler said "this can cost up to $750/day for a Correctional Placement," and that residential-care costs have increased significantly.

Committee members, including Chairman Billy Fried, discussed strategies to limit cost increases and the shortage of foster homes. The presentation and ensuing discussion focused on budgeting implications for 2027; no formal budget action was taken at the July 15 meeting, but members indicated the matter will be considered during upcoming budget planning.
