Committee flags enforcement and signage challenges for device rules

Committee members acknowledged that enforcement of a sidewalk e-bike prohibition presents practical challenges and discussed alternatives including signage, walk-your-bike zones in business districts, targeted enforcement hours, and education campaigns.

One member noted that enforcing a numeric sidewalk speed limit is impractical and that police cannot realistically use radar on sidewalks. Several members suggested signage and initial education/enforcement blitzes (officers asking riders to walk their devices) as a more workable approach than immediate fines.

Members also debated how to treat the Midway/CBD business districts (one side-ride versus walk-your-bike zones) and whether to exclude certain wide sidewalks or specific streets (Memorial Parkway, US 27) from sidewalk rules. The committee asked staff to return options with sample signage language and mapped examples to aid enforcement planning.
