Capitola police chief expresses condolences after daylight homicide; council and residents respond

Capitola’s chief of police, who identified herself as Sarah, addressed the council and community on July 23 following a daylight homicide earlier in the week. She said officers, detectives and law‑enforcement partners "worked tirelessly to quickly identify, locate, and arrest the suspect," expressed condolences to the victim’s family, and said the department conducted a facilitated debrief and remains committed to a thorough investigation.

Council members and several residents publicly thanked the police department and mutual‑aid partners. Council members asked staff to coordinate outreach to other agencies that assisted on scene and to continue debriefing with partners, including mall security where the incident occurred. The chief encouraged anyone affected to use support resources and stressed the department’s commitment to transparency as the criminal process continues.
