Charter review committee forwards draft charter to council and city attorney, sets transition window

The Mechanicville Charter Review Committee voted to adopt Resolution 0126, transmitting the draft city charter to the city council and the city attorney for review and comment. The committee asked that comments be returned before Labor Day so it can reconvene shortly afterward to consider changes before a public finalization.

The resolution text transmitted states the committee’s intent: to adopt the attached draft charter and forward it to the council and attorney for review. The Chair told the group, “I need a motion to adjourn,” after the vote and administrative next steps were set. Committee members agreed the draft would be circulated to council members and the city attorney, and the clerk was asked to coordinate with the county board of elections on referendum wording and proofing.

Committee members discussed timing for implementation: the draft calls for a transition to begin Jan. 1, 2027 and for the charter to be fully implemented on or before Jan. 1, 2030. The committee also agreed to circulate supplemental code suggestions provided by Lawrence Case and to provide printed copies of the package to the council and attorney for review.
