The Verona Area School District presented its summer‑school program and an accompanying video at the July board meeting, highlighting student experiences and a new pathway for high‑school students interested in teaching.
District presenters described a multi‑tier leadership team for summer school that included a named coordinator (Marlene), elementary and secondary principals and a program of practicum placements. Officials also introduced a pilot non‑classroom classroom‑teaching program for high‑school students; the presentation named participants Mirabelle Gonzalez and Max Schultz as student participants in that pathway. "This year, we introduced our non‑role classroom teaching Program for high school students interested in becoming educators," the presentation said, noting the district intends to follow and encourage participants to return as volunteers and ultimately as district teachers.
Administrators told the board that planning for the next year's summer program begins immediately after the current session ends and involves cross‑department collaboration (academic services, human resources, student services, transportation, nutrition, technology and facilities). The district emphasized staff onboarding, safety procedures and professional development to ensure quality instruction during the four‑week session.
Board members praised the scope and rigor of programming, distinguishing it from a recreational summer camp. One member said visiting sites revealed "the magnitude of our programming" and underscored the academic focus. The board noted the program's role in informing budget decisions as the district prepares next year’s finances.
