Secondary summer program drew 892 students; district reports high completion and credit offerings

Samantha Wolf, the secondary summer‑school principal, told the board the program served 892 students across middle‑ and high‑school models and offered 32 different course options during the four‑week session.

Wolf said the district used AVID strategies to strengthen summer literacy and included credit‑bearing offerings to keep students on track for graduation. She noted particular classes created to support historically marginalized students, including an "essential elements" course and a Literacy for Success option that offered English‑language growth and credit over the summer. "We had representation from every single VASD school site... we had 892 students enrolled in the secondary summer school," she said. The district reported that roughly 96% of secondary students "exceeded their expectations" in the summer program.

Administrators pointed to positive staff and caregiver feedback and asked the board to consider how attendance and wait lists for popular classes should inform future planning and budgeting. Board members emphasized the importance of attendance for credit‑bearing courses and asked for continued data on outcomes in the fall.
