Council asks staff to inventory local hazmat handlers and invites LA Fire to brief council

Vice Mayor Lopez brought forward community concerns about potential hazardous‑materials processing in an industrial corridor near schools. Council agreed the city should know what regulated hazardous‑materials activities exist within its boundaries and how oversight is provided. Staff explained that multiple agencies (Los Angeles Fire Department, AQMD, DTSC and county regulatory bodies) share jurisdiction, and the city will request an inventory of businesses that handle regulated hazardous materials and invite LA Fire or the appropriate regulatory agency to brief the council on oversight and community protection measures.

Council also directed the police chief to attempt to contact the resident who raised the issue to identify a specific facility so staff can conduct immediate inquiry while the broader inventory and agency briefing are prepared. Staff will return within two to three months with findings or a regulator briefing.
