Lee County finance panel previews budget, highlights new accounting tool

Reed Ary, speaking for county finance, opened the budget overview by explaining the new workflow for departmental budget submissions and change tracking. “We purchased it this year. Uh it's like $600,” he said, noting the package is intended to make inputs easier for department heads and to protect against accidental edits.

The presentation stressed that figures discussed are preliminary and conservative. Clay, who helped test the software, described the new interface as “relatively easy.” The committee was told the process lets staff stage changes, share drafts with department heads and track adjustments before formal budget hearings. Reed said department heads will present unadjusted requests to the finance committee and that finance staff will only make modest technical adjustments (for wages and benefit projections) before hearings.

Committee members were reminded budget hearings begin with social services and proceed through department presentations; the schedule for hearings was noted to be posted on the county calendar. The committee took a five-minute break midmeeting and later adjourned after a motion by Tom Wilson and a second by Jason Anderson.
