Eureka Union board approves one full-time groundskeeper position to maintain campuses

The Eureka Union School District board voted to add one full-time equivalent (FTE) groundskeeper to its maintenance department, citing a need for on-site irrigation and grounds care beyond the district’s current outsourced mowing services.

A facilities ad hoc committee recommended the addition after more than a year of planning. Committee members said the district has long outsourced mowing and related tasks and that an in-house position would allow staff to address irrigation, weed whacking and campus presentation more consistently.

Trustee Aaron moved to add one FTE groundskeeper; the motion was seconded by Trustee Matt and passed with no public comment. “I think having someone internally instead of just the hired mow and blow will help give a little more love and a facelift to every single school,” one trustee said, summarizing the committee’s rationale.

Staff indicated the position would be funded from the maintenance budget; the committee recommended the board increase maintenance staffing and separately consider related contract changes for herbicide/pre-emergence work. The board approved the FTE as agenda item 2A and will process onboarding through the district’s human resources procedures.
