Mayor pro tem honors Ernesto and Ruby Calderon with posthumous proclamation

Mayor Pro Tem Chitovella presented a proclamation on behalf of the City of Austin declaring July 23 as Ernesto and Ruby Calderon Day, honoring the couple’s decades of activism in the Chicano community and their work with organizations including LULAC and the Mexican American Alliance. Chitovella said the Calderons "devoted their lives to advancing civil rights, expanding educational opportunity, and uplifting the Chicano community across Texas."

Diana Peña, the Calderons’ daughter, accepted the recognition on behalf of the family and thanked council members and attendees for the honor. "This makes it all the more special," Peña said, noting family members and longtime friends who attended. The proclamation noted the Calderons’ long marriage and Austin residency and recognized their leadership in civic life dating back to Waco and later Central Texas.
