City proclaims ‘Gio Day’ as local R&B artist urges support for independent musicians

Council member Paige Ellis presented a proclamation declaring July 23 as Gio Day in Austin to honor singer-songwriter Giovanna Fields, known professionally as Gio, for her contributions to Austin’s R&B scene and for supporting local artists. Ellis noted Gio’s recognition as a South by Southwest performer and a recipient of an Austin Live Music Fund grant.

Giovanna Fields thanked family, supporters and the local music community and called on residents to support independent artists by attending shows, buying merchandise and sharing music. "It's hard to live in the moment when you are the moment," Gio said, urging the city to continue investing in the cultural ecosystem that sustains musicians.
