South Dakota Mines creates Center for Education Innovation to pilot alternative academic models

South Dakota Mines asked the board to approve a Center for Education Innovation — an academic incubator designed to experiment with alternative delivery models, accelerated programs and competency‑based credentials. Darcy Briggs described the center as a conceptual, nimble unit operating under the university brand but with procedural autonomy to test and rapidly prototype new offerings.

Briggs said the center is not a new building but a small, responsive team that will pursue rapid prototyping, close collaboration with direct customers and iterative learning. The board approved the center and related policy revisions in a combined motion that waived additional reading requirements; members described the approach as a way to "find a need, go do it, and make it happen."
