Jefferson County approves routine minutes, contracts and debris removal; departments report ongoing recovery and staffing concerns

At its July 9 meeting, the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners approved several routine administrative items and contracts and heard operational updates from multiple county departments.

The board approved the minutes of the previous meeting, all accounts payable vouchers and payroll claim dockets. Commissioners’ Administrative Assistant Sarah Alexander presented annual water‑treatment contracts with Atom Chemical to service the Courthouse and the old jail at a rate of $150 per month per contract. Commissioner David Bramer moved to accept the contracts; Commissioner Ron Lee seconded and the motion carried.

Department updates included: 911 Director Brandon Tucker reporting completed dispatcher training and one vacancy and noting progress on a server relocation project with LEAP; Animal Shelter Director Tricia Parker reporting the shelter is at capacity (about 21 dogs and 25 adoptable cats) and an uptick in tick‑borne illnesses among dogs; Project Manager Brian Amick reporting resubmitted animal shelter documents to the RDA, receipt of a geotechnical report, and IEDC approval pending final funding for the campground; Court Services Director Ani Morley reported a second female JCAP cohort beginning next week and that state funding reductions (including elimination of Drug Court funding and cuts to Community Corrections) are driving pursuit of additional grants; Highway Superintendent Jason Copeland said crews largely completed tornado debris cleanup but reduced roadside mowing due to gas‑tax uncertainty and reported road damage on K Road; EMA Director Matt True outlined upcoming emergency preparedness exercises and a pending IDHS visit and said storm damage assessments are largely complete; Auditor Heather Huff said the Auditor’s Office will begin a homestead exemption audit and will notify property owners requesting residency verification; improperly claimed exemptions could result in tax repayment and penalties.
