Building and Standards Commission refines annual internal review, onboarding and notes $500,000 demolition funding for next fiscal year

At its July 22 meeting the Building and Standards Commission reviewed a draft annual internal report and debated which objectives to keep, how to measure effectiveness, and ways to improve onboarding for new commissioners.

Members discussed tracking metrics such as the number of cases resolved during the reporting period, penalties collected (and the limits of that metric given long case timelines), and whether to report owners who appear repeatedly. Several commissioners favored a streamlined set of objectives rather than a long wish list. The commission asked staff to maintain an up‑to‑date resource binder and to develop onboarding materials and a periodic educational session or "boot camp" to orient new members to the commission’s quasi‑judicial role.

Staff also noted a budget change: demolition funding is slated to increase to approximately $500,000 in the next fiscal year, up from about $175,000, which staff said will help address the backlog of demolition orders. Commissioners discussed how that change will affect prioritization and whether the commission should track demolitions and penalty collections annually as part of its internal review.

The chair asked staff to finalize the goals and objectives for submission by the end of July and to prepare a short checklist of milestones for property owners who return to the commission after continuances.
