Board adopts three NMSBA policy advisories, hears first reading on digital citizenship guidance

The Silver Consolidated Schools Board adopted multiple policy advisories from the New Mexico School Boards Association and heard a first reading on digital citizenship curriculum guidance.

Superintendent William Hawkins explained that the proposed advisory language reflects legislative updates and statewide guidance. Regarding digital citizenship (NMSBA advisory 276), Hawkins said the language requires schools to "provide annual and develop developmentally appropriate digital citizenship instruction to students in kindergarten through grade 12 with topics to include at a minimum the effects of screen time on children and risks associated with social media." He noted the district will align local policy with the legislative language and incorporate required curriculum elements.

Later in the action portion of the meeting the board moved and approved second readings and adoption of NMSBA policy advisories numbered 275 (GCIA, teacher residency program), 277 (JLCEC, cardiac emergency response/automated external defibrillators) and 278 (JLF, reporting child abuse and child protection).

Why it matters: These advisories set local expectations for student safety, teacher preparation and curricular content on digital citizenship and safety. The board adopted the second readings during the action agenda after having reviewed them in a prior meeting.

Whats next: The newly adopted advisories will be incorporated into district policy. Staff will bring final policy language consistent with the boards adoption to the clerk for publication and implementation.
